- “Paula Revera” rides horse on Bedford Ave, declares “the developers are coming!”
- Norman Siegel to give impassioned speech on rezoning
When: Saturday, April 30, 1:30 PM
Where: Williamsburg, Brooklyn’s Bedford Avenue. Starting at corner of Bedford and Metropolitan; ending at McCarren Park.
Who: Norman Siegel, candidate for Public Advocate. “Paula Revera” of Creative Industries Coalition.
“Paula Revera” will ride her horse down Bedford Avenue warning the neighborhood that “The Developers Are Coming!” A rally at McCarren Park will follow including a street theater battle between the Flowers and Towers that appeared at Gifford Miller’s campaign headquarters last week. Norman Siegel, candidate for Public Advocate and former head of the New York Civil Liberties Union, will then deliver an impassioned speech concerning the proposed rezoning.
Like the Founding Fathers, the People of Williamsburg/Greenpoint are declaring their right to self-determination and a local government that will be accountable to them. United, the community demands that NYC Department of City Planning’s proposed rezoning of Greenpoint and Williamsburg reflect the needs and concerns of those who live and work in the neighborhood.
The Creative Industries Coalition supports local Community Board 1’s development plan which preserves the architectural character of the neighborhood, protects the 4,000 jobs that would be lost under the Bloomberg plan, allows for park development and access for all community residents, mandates affordable housing, and still provides a substantial return on investment for developers.
The Bloomberg plan would allow the construction of up to twenty-two 40-story luxury condominium towers (taller than the Williamsburg Bridge) on the Williamsburg/ Greenpoint waterfront, permanently destroying the architectural character of the neighborhood, blocking light from hundreds of other buildings, drastically raising rents for local residents and businesses, eliminating the light industrial manufacturers in the area, overburdening an already over-taxed subway line and causing other harmful effects for the local community and New York City generally.
Great Photo Ops: Paula Revera in American Revolutionary costume, riding down Bedford Avenue on a real horse, followed by others on “horse-cycles”; community members dressed as Towers and Flowers, engaged in battle; Public Advocate Candidate Norman Siegel in McCarren Park.
